Image of Godfroi de Bouillon

T his is the likeness of Godfroi de Bouillon in the Museum of Toledo, Spain.

W hile I have no doubt that the face looks like Godfroi, I must wonder about the attire. I've been told by Alessandra Ori that the double-barred cross is known as the "Cross of Lorraine", a French symbol. It originates in (wait for it!) Lorraine, the region of Rene d'Anjou, and is therefore a very important feature. Used as the symbol of Free France during World War II, it must have carried some meaning even way back in the 13th century.
